Phantom Blade Zero: what to know before the October 29 launch
Phantom Blade Zero launches Thursday, October 29 on PS5 and PC: Soul's story, kungfupunk combat, difficulty modes and Donnie Yen's role.
Phantom Blade Zero, S-GAME's action RPG, launches on Thursday, October 29, 2026 on PS5 and PC. In the US and some other regions, it unlocks on October 28, which is why the Steam page lists that date. Here is what you need to know with two weeks to go.
A dark wuxia world
S-GAME describes Phantom Blade Zero as a blend of classic wuxia storytelling and fast-paced action, built on Unreal Engine 5. You play Soul, a warrior with only 66 days left to live. The setting, the Wulin, is a world torn apart by conflict and conspiracies, where traditional martial arts meet a dark fantasy the studio calls "kungfupunk": cold steel clashes with mechanical prosthetics.
Side quests matter: by helping the people Soul meets, you can open up new parts of the story and uncover what set it all in motion. According to S-GAME, quoted by Softonic, the game has up to eight different endings.
Combat built around your arsenal
The game's fights were choreographed by renowned martial arts choreographers using motion capture. As you explore, you unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons, called Phantom Edges. You upgrade them, pair them with accessories, and can lean toward ranged attacks or summoning allies. Defeating certain enemies adds to your arsenal. If you change your mind about an upgraded weapon, you can reforge it and get back the materials you put into it.
On PS5, the DualSense's adaptive triggers and haptic feedback convey the weight of each weapon, from the tension of a bowstring to a charging cannon.
Three difficulty options
S-GAME offers several ways to play:
- Wayfarer, for those who mainly want to enjoy the story;
- Hellwalker, with smarter, more adaptive enemies;
- Sixty-Six Days, reserved for the most daring players.
Donnie Yen on board
Martial arts film star Donnie Yen is a creative consultant on the game, to capture the authentic spirit of kung fu. He also plays Mó Yuán, through facial and motion capture. S-GAME promises that every encounter with the character will be a high-tension moment.
Release and pre-orders
The game was originally due on September 9 before being pushed to October 29. Pre-orders are open on the PlayStation Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store. On PS5, pre-ordering unlocks two items early, a treasure pot accessory and the Heritage appearance, which can also be earned by playing.
