Dynasty Warriors 3 came out on PS2 in 2001, and Xtreme Legends followed in 2002. On October 1, 2026, Koei Tecmo released both in one package, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. Here is what is new, what was renamed, and what is still unclear after the first few days.

What's in the box

The remaster bundles Dynasty Warriors 3 and its Xtreme Legends expansion. Xtreme Legends gave story modes to seven officers outside the three kingdoms: Lu Bu, Diaochan, Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, Zhang Jiao, Meng Huo and Zhurong. They are all here.

It is out on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam). A Switch 1 version was announced, then cancelled in June 2026. The Standard Edition costs $39.99 / €39.99. The Digital Deluxe Edition costs $69.99 / €69.99 and adds 42 retro costumes and 42 extra weapons, among other things.

The producer told GamingBolt that PS5 and Xbox Series target 60 fps at 4K with upscaling. Switch 2 runs at a variable 30 to 60 fps. On PC, Steam lists 4K, ultrawide and HDR support.

One thing French players should know: there is no French, neither text nor voice, on any platform. Steam lists English, Japanese, Korean and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

Combat: three new defensive tools

The core is still the PS2 game: Normal attacks, Charge attacks, Musou attacks, True Musou at low health. The remaster adds three moves on top:

  • Evasion: a dodge that also gets you out of a crowd.
  • Just Evasion: dodge at the right moment and you counterattack.
  • Perfect Power Guard: block with the right timing to deflect the attack and stun strong enemies.

You can also call your horse, a feature borrowed from Dynasty Warriors: ORIGINS.

If you want the 2001 feel, the game has two presets. Classic Settings stays close to the original. Normal Settings turns the new features on. You can also toggle features one by one.

Battles look different

The PS2 game hid the distance in fog. The developers told 4Gamer that the remaster drops the fog, so you can see far across the battlefield. They also put more soldiers on screen. According to them, overall difficulty stays close to the original but leans "slightly easier".

Two quality-of-life changes come from ORIGINS. You can quit a stage and resume later. If you fail, you can rewind and retry instead of starting the battle again (TheSixthAxis review).

The original English dub is still here. Noisy Pixel calls the performances "a product of their time" and was glad Koei Tecmo kept them. The rock soundtrack is back too.

Weapons, unlocks and Chaos

The biggest change for completionists: conditions are shown in the game. Free Mode and the stage preparation screen list the rare items and unique weapons a stage holds, with their conditions. A button during battle shows them again. On PS2, you needed a guide.

4TH WEAPON Hard or higher Play the weapon’s officer, meet the condition, win the stage. 5TH WEAPON Chaos only In the Original or Xtreme tab of Free Mode. CONDITIONS shown in game Briefing screen, in-battle button, Database menu.

The rules themselves look familiar:

  • 4th weapons still need Hard or higher. Easy and Normal never give one, even if you meet the condition (KeenGamer).
  • 5th weapons drop only on Chaos. Every officer has one, Ziluan included.
  • The conditions guides have checked so far match the PS2 ones. Example: Lu Bu's 4th weapon still asks you to defeat Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei at Hulao Gate, on Dong Zhuo's side.

Weapon Fusion is new. In the Camp menu, you sacrifice weapons you don't need to move their element and skills onto another weapon. The developers told 4Gamer it is meant to rescue unique weapons that were weak in the original.

What is Chaos? It is the English name of the top difficulty. The Japanese name, 最強, has not changed since Xtreme Legends. As far as we can tell, the remaster renamed this tier but did not add a sixth one.

New content

Ziluan

The hero of Dynasty Warriors: ORIGINS joins the roster, which brings it to 42 officers. Destructoid's unlock condition: finish Musou Mode once. He has no story of his own. He plays in Free, Challenge and VS modes, according to respec.net.

Side Story scenarios

Three new high-difficulty stages, one per kingdom. The developers describe them as "what if" battles:

  • Wei: a rematch at Chibi against Wu and Shu.
  • Wu: the Battle of Wuzhang Plains, against Wei and Shu.
  • Shu: the Siege of Hefei Castle, against Wei and Wu.

You unlock each one by meeting conditions in an earlier battle, on Hard or higher. The first clear must be with the kingdom's ruler: Cao Cao, Sun Quan or Liu Bei. After that, any officer can play it in Free Mode. These details come from one guide (respec.net), so treat them with care.

Names that changed

If you played the PS2 version in English, some names will surprise you.

  • Officers: the official roster uses joined-up pinyin. Zhen Ji is now Zhenji. Da Qiao, Xiao Qiao, Diao Chan, Zhu Rong, Fu Xi and Nu Wa become Daqiao, Xiaoqiao, Diaochan, Zhurong, Fuxi and Nuwa.
  • Stages: "Battle at Hu Lao Gate" becomes Battle of Hulao Gate in the official demo. Guides also report Battle of Shiting in place of the PS2's mistranslated "You Ting".
  • Challenge Mode: Endurance and Time Attack return. Steam achievements name four other courses: Rush, Meteor, Assault and Unification. On PS2, Xtreme Legends had Downhill, Shooting Star, Combination and Triathlon. They are probably the same four modes, renamed. We have not confirmed which name matches which.

Co-op and online

Two-player split-screen is back, offline. It works in Musou, Free and VS modes. Online co-op is announced as a post-launch update. Koei Tecmo has not given a date. At Tokyo Game Show, the developers told 4Gamer they want it out "by around January 2027".

Still unclear

Three days after launch, some points remain open:

  • Chaos: no source states an unlock condition. A Steam forum thread suggests you can pick it from the start.
  • Changed conditions: Japanese guide Game8 notes some weapon timings and positions that differ from the original. Check a condition in the game before trusting a PS2 guide.
  • Rare items: two Japanese fan guides say they drop on any difficulty. Nothing official confirms it.
  • Easy and Beginner: the English names of the two lowest tiers are not confirmed.
  • Challenge modes: which new name matches which Xtreme Legends mode.
  • XL bonus battles: we have not confirmed that the Bandit, Pirate and Rogue Fortress battles are all still in the game.

We will update this article as these points get answered.

Track your unlocks
