Nintendo rules out another Switch 2 price increase for now, Sony raises its PlayStation forecast and EA brings 25 PC classics, Road Rash included, to Steam.
Nintendo and Sony reported their half-year results, while EA and GOG put a whole shelf of PC classics back on sale. On the games side, 007 First Light gives away its first mission and the Xbox PC app gets a makeover.
Nintendo isn't considering another Switch 2 price increase
Nintendo sold 6.49 million Switch 2 consoles between April and September, a period in which its net sales fell 12.1% while operating profit rose 49.1%. Splatoon Raiders, released in July, passed 2.4 million copies. Asked about the console's price, which already went up this year, president Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo is not considering another increase, Reuters reports (via The Verge). He added that the company can secure enough memory despite the shortage, as Eurogamer explains. Nintendo kept its full-year forecast unchanged.
Sony raises its PlayStation forecast
Sony raised its full-year sales forecast for its games business by 6%, according to the quarterly results covered by GamesIndustry.biz and Eurogamer. Marvel's Wolverine has sold more than 2.4 million copies. The PS5 sold 2.6 million units for the quarter, down from 4 million a year earlier. Sony credits the revision to sales of third-party games and its online services.
EA brings 25 PC classics back on Steam
Road Rash, six Wing Commander games, the Ultima series, Theme Hospital and both Crusader titles are back on Steam, 25 games in all by The Verge's count. Seven of them are anniversary editions updated for modern PCs, with cutscenes restored from original video tapes the publisher rediscovered. Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition sells for €9.99 on the European Steam store. If you already own a Wing Commander game on GOG, the matching anniversary edition is yours for free.
GOG readies its client for Linux and moves into publishing
To mark its 18th birthday, GOG announced that its GOG GALAXY client is coming to Linux, with no date yet, and that the Windows and Mac versions have been reworked to run faster. The store is also backing its first original games through Retrovibe, classic-style indie titles sold DRM-free, starting with Project Warlock: Lost Chapters. Its engineers got Wing Commander Prophecy back in shape, and Nox, picked by the community, now runs properly on modern machines.
007 First Light gives away its opening mission
The opening mission of 007 First Light, set in Iceland, is free to play on PC (Steam) and Xbox Series X|S with IO Interactive's Starter Pack. The Starter Pack reaches PS5 on Tuesday, November 10. Your progress carries over if you then buy the full game. PlayStation Plus Premium members get a one-hour trial of the game instead.
The Xbox PC app launches faster
Xbox Insiders can now try a new version of the Xbox app on PC that launches up to 60% faster, Microsoft says. The library gets new filters, and friends move into the main navigation, so seeing what they're playing or starting a chat takes fewer clicks. Over the coming weeks, the web version of cloud gaming will gather every game you can stream in a single tab. The refreshed design is also reaching Xbox cloud gaming apps on supported TVs and VR headsets.
