Square Enix releases Final Fantasy Resonance on Thursday, October 22, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Xbox on PC). The publisher bills it as the first HD-2D Final Fantasy, with retro-inspired graphics that push pixel art into modern settings. A free demo has been available since September 3.

Brave Exvius, rebuilt for consoles

The game is based on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile game. Square Enix stresses that it is not a direct port: it has been "extensively rebuilt" as a full-fledged console RPG. You follow Rain, Lasswell and Fina, among others, in the Kingdom of Grandshelt, against Veritas of the Dark. The world brings back series staples: crystals, chocobos, espers, airships and moogles.

Turn-based battles

Combat is turn-based, "with a modern twist". The idea: exploit enemy weaknesses and break them to stop them from acting, then take the lead with extra actions and Resonance attacks. Visions, echoes of series heroes, fight alongside your party with their own abilities: Square Enix names Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light. Sephiroth also appears: you can find and challenge him to win a special reward.

Demo, editions and pricing

  • Free demo on every platform: the opening through the end of the first chapter (3 to 5 hours, according to Square Enix), with save data carrying over to the full game.
  • Price: $49.99 (standard) and $59.99 (Digital Deluxe) in the United States, £49.99 and £54.99 in the United Kingdom. In France, consoles ask €59.99 and €69.99, while Steam asks €49.99 and €59.99.
  • The Digital Deluxe adds the "Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack" (gear and items).
  • The Collector's Edition, sold on the Square Enix Store for PS5, Switch and Switch 2, includes the boxed game, the Digital Deluxe bonuses, acrylic blocks, an artbook, the soundtrack on CD (120 tracks) and a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game card.
  • Pre-orders include the "Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack" until launch.
  • To pre-order: digital versions (PC, PS5, Switch 2) on Instant Gaming, in the "Where to buy" box.
  • Voice acting in English and Japanese. Rated PEGI 12.

On consoles, the game unlocks at midnight Paris time on October 22, according to the PlayStation and Xbox listings. Square Enix's Asian portal gives October 23 for Steam: that date is for Asia, and the Steam page shows October 22 in Europe.

What the press says

Early hands-on impressions are mostly enthusiastic about the HD-2D treatment. Nintendo Life writes that "Final Fantasy and HD-2D is a wonderful pairing". GosuGamers agrees but adds a caveat: the CG-animated 3D cutscenes for summons and cameo abilities "felt very ill-fitting" with the game's look.
